Repeatedly throughout the Bible, we’re told to be grateful.

But when you’re in a season plagued with difficulty and challenges, practicing gratitude can feel impossible.

God doesn’t tell us to practice gratitude without reason, though. Like everything else in the Bible, He gives us this instruction because He knows being grateful is good for us.

Take some time today to reflect on all the ways God has been good to you, and then thank Him for His kindness. Recognizing His mercy in one area of your life makes it easier to see His blessings in other areas, too.

The decorations around us remind us to be thankful, and the month is marked by a holiday that celebrates the act of giving thanks.

But gratitude is something we should be teaching our kids about all year long.

As parents, we spend a lot of our time caring for our children.

We pack lunches, shuffle our kids to and from school, and help them with their homework — all while making them feel loved and supported.

When you’re in the middle of a busy sports season or you’re navigating a particularly tricky situation with your child, it’s easy to feel like all your work is in vain.

But it’s not.

Parenting is ministry, and when you care for your child, you are making God’s kindness and mercy visible to the people you love the most.

Don’t grow weary, even though it’s easy to become discouraged. Your Father in heaven sees you, even in the seasons that feel thankless. Cling to Him, and He promises to sustain you.

Happiness, sadness, anger, joy. Every emotion serves a purpose, no matter how much we wish we could pass over the unpleasant ones.

As a parent, you’re not only responsible for managing your own emotions — you’re given the task of helping your children learn to manage theirs, too. When your child has a temper tantrum or is triggered by something you don’t understand, it’s easy to feel helpless and lost.

But God is with you in those moments still. Your Father in heaven only gives good gifts, and He offers you the knowledge, patience and resources you need to support your child in their emotional development.

The road might be rocky, but following Jesus is always worth it.
