Never-ending shopping lists. Countless party invitations. Unspoken expectations and hurt feelings when those expectations are not met.

The holiday season is supposed to be one of the most joyful times of the year. But often, it becomes one of the most stressful times.

If you’re finding yourself overwhelmed by the number of tasks you must complete and feel pressure to make this the “best” holiday ever for your children, it might be time to reduce your holiday stress. These tips can help.

How to Reduce Your Anxiety During the Holidays

Focus on the Family, a HopeConnect™ strategic partner, along with 4KIDS licensed therapists outline the following strategies to help you limit the amount of holiday stress you feel and avoid holiday burnout

1. Set Expectations.

Discuss past holiday experiences and clarify family values and expectations. That way, you can reduce the likelihood of frustration and disappointment later.

2. Define Family Boundaries.

Decide upfront how much money you’ll spend on gifts and how many social events you’ll attend as a family.

3. Collaborate.

Share holiday responsibilities and planning tasks with family members to avoid resentment and reduce holiday stress for any single person.

4. Maintain Routines

Keep practicing healthy sleep, diet, exercise and spiritual practices. Using calendars and other planning tools can help you stay on track.

5. Plan for Conflict.

Be ready to address potential conflicts and they arise, and monitor your and your children’s emotional limits to avoid meltdowns.

6. Prioritize Self-Care.

The holiday season gives us ample time to spend with our loved ones. Don’t feel guilty about taking an afternoon or evening for yourself to rest, reflect and recharge alone.

7. Practice Gratitude.

Remember the true reason for the season and show gratitude to God for all He did through Jesus. Here are more tips for practicing gratitude.
